On with my rant.
.
Is it just me or does it seem like heroines in most Young Adult novels were cut out of the same mold? They're always Caucasion (even if they're from another planet,) always have clear complexions, are always slender (although they complain that they're fat), and have it totally together. I have yet to meet an overweight, African American heroine with dyslexia who gets a volcano zit at least once a month. Now, I know enough to avoid books like THE GOSSIP GIRLS. I'm talking about my favorite genres, Historicals and Science Fiction/Fantasy. Besides what I've just complained about, the parents of Historical SF & F heroines are always dead, hateful, and/or hating each other.
.
You'll never get me to read TWILIGHT by Stephanie Meyer, because I just can't read about blood-sucking dead guys without gagging. It's just me. After giving birth so many times, I just can't stand the thought of blood. Don't mind me- you go for it. However, I was reading a review of TWILIGHT and the reviewer (an adult) was complaining about how klutzy the Heroine is and I thought, "Yes! Yes, now that's what I'm talking about!" What real teenager hasn't tripped over his or her own feet? Between 12 and 14 most of us were growing too fast to keep up and inevitable ran into walls and such. Maybe this is part of why Stephanie Meyer's books are so hot. Her teens are 'real.' I'm all for THE HOST, by the way. Just haven't had time for a review.
So, I'm wondering- why all the generic YA Heroines? Do authors and publishers not remember what it's like to be teenagers? Or, do they think girls want to fantasize their zits away when they read?
